Most of us are super active humans with work, family, and a variety of professional and personal obligations that keep us constantly running around. Imagine if we each only had one pair of shoes to last an entire lifetime? That would never happen because in many cases, in less than a year, we would wear a hole through them. The same goes for the tires on our cars and trucks, and they do thousands more miles than we do in more severe conditions. But how do I know if my tires need attention?
These are the top three simple ways that you can tell if your tires need attention:
Sight – Most of the time it’s easy to tell just by looking at our tires if they’re too worn. If you’re not sure, you can try the classic penny test– which is to stick a penny upside down into the tread in its thickest place. If you can see Lincoln’s head, you probably need a new tire.\ If your tire doesn’t have ridges or grooves, it’s probably beyond time for new tires. You should also look to make sure your tires aren’t more worn on one outside edge than the other, or on the right versus the left, as this could indicate the need for an alignment.
Smell – Smell is a tricky one because there can be so many other factors, like oil or gasoline spilled on the road, or a plastic bag that you happen to pick up as you’re driving through a debris filled area — but generally, if you smell some kind of burning rubber, you need to get your tires checked.
Feel – A vibration in the steering wheel or bouncing from the car is a pretty classic sign that you have a tire that’s out of balance — or that needs to be replaced. If this happens while you’re slowing down, it may be a brake or rotor situation– but generally it’s a classic sign of a tire issue, especially when it happens every time at a specific speed.
